Del Records’ issue, His Woman, Her Man, is a collection of previously unreleased material by Ike Turner & His Kings of Rhythm from the years 1970-1973 (and yes, Tina was in the band for these). The period was a fertile one for Turner, who had not only been digging deeply into funkier rhythms and progressions for his brand of soul, but for his embrace of new production techniques and instruments. Here are some of the first ARP synthesizer and drum machine tracks ever recorded and the way Turner utilizes them, we can hear the later sounds of the P-Funk organization as well as later Earth, Wind & Fire, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Herbie Hancock’s funk-jazz directions. The vast majority of these 17 tunes are originals, most of which were recorded at Turner’s Bolic Sound Studio in Los Angeles; it was a virtual sound laboratory. The sound of the ARP and drum machine — in 1971! — on traditional blues tracks like “I’ve Got My Mojo Workin’,” and Berry Gordy’s “Money,” turns the originals inside out and rocks them up. Turner was very much interested in crossing over to the rock & roll generation’s penchant for heavier sounds — evidenced even more by the reworked funk version of “Proud Mary,” which was cut while Ike & Tina’s hit version was still on the charts. Wilder still are Ike’s own “He Makes Me Want to Holler,” with an unmistakable gospel chorus, steep funky backbeat, and the ARP put through a wah wah pedal! The straight Memphis soul rave-up of “It’s Groovier Across the Line,” is stretched to the limit by fuzzed-out guitar effects but never, ever gives up the sweet southern groove. Tina’s voice is in its prime here, as evidenced by the opener “Can’t Find My Mind,” and “Baby Get It On,” which were originally written for the Rolling Stones — who never recorded them. Three of these covers, “Mojo,” “Money,” and “Ya Ya,” come from an unused Blue Thumb session that proved the label execs had their heads up their asses for not releasing them at the time. Bottom line is that these sessions may not be awesome in terms of fidelity, but they’re plenty good, and in terms of sheer musical acumen and killer grooves, they more than compensate. Awesome.

Cassy Britton’s status as a DJ is hard to rival: she currently holds residencies at four top clubs—Panorama Bar, Trouw, Rex Club and Output—and used to work behind the counter at famed Berlin record shop Hard Wax. “The tracks on the mix all represent what I love about electronic music, and what I love playing,” she says. “Simply, each track is individually beautiful–there is not much more to add.” Her 17-track effort includes tracks from Norm Talley, John Talabot, Basic Soul Unit, Emptyset and Marco Zenker among others.

fabric 71 will be Cassy’s fourth commercially released mix, following 2006′s Panorama Bar 01 and two subsequent efforts for Cocoon. She adds: “The project has come at a perfect time for me in terms of me being able to communicate where I am at artistically. I have aimed to get back to the roots of what this should be about for every DJ—namely playing records for the love of playing records—and not because of anything else.” The CD launch party will take place at fabric in London on Saturday, August 17th, with Cassy playing alongside Craig Richards, Basic Soul Unit and more.

A killer South African Jazz Funk album from Johannesburg, totally undiscovered and recorded in 1975. The project Abahambi is a never mentioned band with the very famous bass-player Sipho Gumede, as the band leader.
Unfortunately no more recording sessions of this particular formation are known. Sipho’s reputation grew higher in the early 80s, while he produced the african Combo „Sakhile“.
Actually this is a lost & non-existing album and the Black Pearl Crew is very proud to present this forgotten black afro pearl to the Afro Funk Community once again.
This vinyl re-issue is limitted to 500 copies !!!

Ground breaking music from harmonica wizard Steve Krase (rhymes with “ACE”) and his Texas based band. The album features Krase on vocals and harmonica. The Blueshound from 90.1 fm KPFT radio describes Krase as “Houston’s Fire Breathing Dragon”! Krase has put together a tremendous band for this project including Houston Press Music Award winner for Best Guitar James Henry and Best Bass “Spare Time “Murray. The project also features guest apperances from Tommie Lee Bradley on vocals and Eric Demmer on Saxophone. Some Day features 7 original songs, 5 of which were penned by Krase’s younger brother David who also appears as a guitarist on the album. Krase’s original tunes feature hard hitting lyrics with a twist. The band pays tribute to some artis that influenced Krase’s Music Style most notably The J Geils Band. Krase delivers powerful covers of Wolf & Justman’s “Jealous Love” and “Did You No Wrong” which were released by the JGB in the early 70′s. Additionally Krase pays homage to the great Wilko Johnson who’s on stage energy and antics during his time with the English based Pub Rockers “Dr. Feelgood” are legendary. The influence of these early rockers can be heard throughout the recording but most notably on “I’m A Rocker” which brings a New York City (Krase’s hometown) edge to the CD.
