The Catch Blues Bands sound has been described as the blues with a splash of rum, where B.B. King meets Bob Marley, with Clapton-like vocals. This mixture of genres has earned The Catch Blues Band a dedicated following in the Upper Ohio Valley since the veteran musicians formed the group in 2006.
The four-piece bands distinctive rhythms create an expansive sound. The interplay between Dana Burkharts elaborate bass lines along with the Latin-influenced percussions created by John J.D. Daner gives the music a serious depth. When added to the unmistakably blues-like raunchiness of Kevin Broshs organ and piano accompaniment and topped off with Mike Roeders distinctive vocal and guitar stylings, The Catch Blues Band will give any blues-lover that back-street blues-battle house feeling.
On August 11th 2007, The Catch Blues Band, in conjunction with their inaugural appearance at the Heritage Music Bluesfest in Wheeling, WV, released their first CD, Its Not Right. Its Not Right is the brainchild of lead singer and guitarist, Mike Roeder. Ive had some of these tunes simmering in my song box since 1996, but it was the inspiration I took from my fellow band-members that really brought it to life , he said. Roeder said his bassist, Dana Burkhart Dana and I have been jamming together since I was 8 years old, in fact, he was my first guitar teacher. All are Wheeling residents, with the exception of Brosh, who currently resides in Shadyside, Ohio.
All ten cuts of Its Not Right were recorded and mastered in Wheeling at Jamie Peck Productions this summer. Peck, an accomplished saxophone player, plays a blood
and guts tenor solo on the CDs final song, Please. Roeder cited many inspirations for the CD, but especially the music I listened to while growing up in North Wheelingthe Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton, Santana and Bob Marley.

I just received the newest release, Sweet Potato Pie, from The Charles Burton Blues Band and it’s a lot of fun! Opening with Shake It!, an uptempo blues rocker, it has a lot of the feel of the Blasters but with a lot more blues. Flat out pickin and a little country rock flavor adds to the overall feel of this cool track. Double Up is a nice shuffle track with a cool lope. Slick blues guitar riffs highlight this track with Adam Koefoed on bass and Asmus Jensen on drums holding down the bottom nicely. Driving Home is a rolling blues rock with cool bass lines from Arnold Ludvig. Chill Boy adds vocals and lead guitar on this track. New York Jump has a real slick jazz overtone and great swing guitar lead over jazz guitar chords. Really nice! Goin’ To Memphis has a bit of a country bottom but retains it’s blues overtones. With a Latin rhythm and stylin guitar riffs, this is a cool track. Burton isn’t ultra flashy here but he plays some really nice riffs. Crackdown an a fast paced shuffle and is a really nice showcase of Burton’s skills on the fretboard. Playing not only straight up blues riffs but also some more experimental and abstracted solo’s here for the enthusiast. Very cool. Livin’ Without You, is a slower ballad Music Style blues track. There is a really nice guitar break in this track that grabs the blues by the short hairs and shakes it. Nice touch! Sweet Potato Pie has the distinct New Orleans Genre and Jensen does a nice job of getting that marching rhythm. Slide guitar work on this track is really tasty, grabbing just a bit of country but really getting into blues rock too. Great track. New Boogie is an instrumental track giving the players a chance to stretch a bit instrumentally. Ludvig lays down some really nice bass soloing (which you don’t often hear) and Burton rips up the fretboard as well. Used To Love That Woman is as standard a blues track as you’ll hear on this release (played Chicago style) with Karl Cabbage on harmonica. Burton keeps the guitar simple and straightforward and this is a real groove down blues. Grab slide riffs on this track are really nice highlights as well. Brown Paper Bag is a super up tempo shuffle with Burton call and responding to himself on vocal and guitar. His slide work on this track is really super well blended with open guitar playing. Another real nice track. Your Number has the real old electric blues Genre feel and I really like it. It isn’t fancy…and that’s what I like about it.. but very effective. The release is concluded with Drop A Dime, a jazzy movie theme type track. With warm minor jazz chords and spoken vocals, this is an interesting track and one that gives the band a chance to stretch a little again in a more musical way. Review by Bman

Daniel O’Sullivan and Alexander Tucker are long time friends and collaborators. Both artists are veterans of the UK experimental underground: O Sullivan as a member of Guapo, Ulver, and Aethenor (with Stephen O Malley), and Tucker with imbogodom and as an eclectic (read: Yeti) solo artist. On their newest album as Grumbling Fur, Glynnaestra, they have crafted an avant-pop album assembled as one would a collage. This structural foundation is built up via an eclectic array of instruments, both acoustic and modified, to pulsating electronic sounds. Add to this mix the pair s entirely modern shamanistic meta-narratives, and the result is a contemporary psychedelic pop delight. Grumbling Fur s world is an innovative one, where every sound contains its own unique story, and is driven by the overarching melody and harmony. O Sullivan and Tucker write pop songs for the sophisticated palate.
The songs on Glynnaestra, have many reference points, from the paean to Blade Runner on the anthemic Ballad Of Roy Batty , to the distant siren song of the ice-cream van on Cream Pool , and even slow burning, molten proto-hip hop on His Moody Face. Mutant electronic rhythms bubble and pop underneath swathes of strings. Glowing at the centre are the duo s unmistakable vocal harmonies, which seem almost telepathically entwined. Throughout, their experimental pedigree shines through, from the mournful cello and guitar of the title track to off kilter percussion of Alapana Blaze.
Grumbling Fur surfaced with debut album Furrier (Aurora Borealis) in 2011. The record was an assemblage from a one-day recording session involving Jussi Lehtisalo of Circle and Pharaoh Overlord and Dave Smith of Guapo, resulting in a suite of psychedelic mantras. The first outing as a duo, Alice, is a session recorded live in the studio for Southern Records’ Latitudes series in 2012, and was inspired by a psychoactive houseplant and the rabbit hole therein.
As their history attests, this is a group unbound from the restrictions of traditionalism and unafraid to shed the pretence of pure abstraction. There’s a tradition of subterranean Englishness at play, harking back to This Heat’s Deceit and Eno’s Another Green World. In their first fully realised album as a duo, the process and texture ripple with a kind of electro-gnosis. Glynnaestra herself (an archaic goddess divined by Tucker and O’Sullivan) presides over the record, transcendent and sphinx like: an apt muse for an album of such lovely and powerful music.
